Michael Scarlett is a year out Quantity Surveyor at EC Harris
How did you become interested in surveying?
I never really knew what I wanted to do when I finished college, but whilst travelling in New Zealand I worked for a construction firm which gave me an insight into surveying. I liked the financial side, but ultimately I was interested in the whole construction process.
What do you enjoy most about working in surveying?
Meeting new people and having the opportunity to work on various projects, big and small. I also like being able to see a project through from a drawing to a completed building, and being able to say I was involved with that.
What interesting projects have you been involved in as surveyor?
To date my most interesting project has been the rebuilding of the 007 stage at Pinewood studios. Although I have had a relatively short professional career, I was given the opportunity to work with a senior surveyor and assist with both the pre and post contract services. It gave me the to opportunity to liaise with the client and work on the design itself.
What are your career ambitions?
Firstly to complete my degree, and then to qualify as a chartered surveyor. Ultimately I’d like to become an expert in the commercial sector.
