RICS Recruit spoke with James Maltman to find out what his thoughts are. James set up the Dubai office of Engage Selection in July 2008. Since then he has been responsible for the development and growth of the business in the MENEA Region. They currently have 15 employees based in their Dubai office.
What is the market currently like for chartered surveyors who wish to work abroad?
There is very little requirement for Chartered Building Surveyors in the MENA region coming from the UK. However, demand for RICS qualified Cost Consultants has remained steady over the past 18 months.
What are the main job roles currently being asked for?
Commercial Managers, Contracts Managers, Cost Consultants, Claims Consultants and Delay Analysts.
How easy is it for chartered surveyors to take up surveying roles in a different country?
As a lot of the contracts are written in modified versions of FIDIC it is quite easy for people coming over from the UK to transfer their skills. Also, RICS is recognised in most parts of the world.
Does having an RICS qualification make it easier to work abroad?
Yes, most client organisations will stipulate in their contracts the qualifications required for the staff of the consultants. On most projects the Cost Consultant or the Project Manager Consultant will be required to employ staff with the RICS qualification.
What advice would you give to someone wanting to seek a new opportunity abroad?
My only suggestion to anyone looking to work overseas is to do it with an open mind as things are very different to how they are in the UK.
