20-year-old Adelle Rhule-Martin discovered the property industry during her work experience and instantly knew it was a job that would perfectly complement her character. Now working as a surveying apprentice at Bilfinger GVA, we find out how beneficial her apprenticeship has been in her career to date.

When I joined GVA, the surveying apprentice program did not exist. I decided to present this idea to GVA’s Senior Regional Director, who agreed that it was something they would like to incorporate into the business. Soon after, someone was employed to implement the surveying apprentice program, which I later applied for.

I enjoyed my work experience at GVA so much that I applied for another opportunity, but this time it was with their environmental department. Toward the end of this work experience, a colleague form the PMC department recognised that I was passionate about pursuing a career in property. They arranged an informal interview with a director of the PMC department to work as an administrator, which led to me securing a three-month contract that later became a permanent position.

You never stop learning

The RICS has provided me with great opportunities to attend networking events, where I've met lots of people who work in the property industry that I would never have met otherwise. I believe everyone I've met and stayed in contact with has given me more exposure and allowed me to raise the profile of apprenticeships within the property industry.

Being able to provide young people with insight into the property industry and encourage them to pursue a career is definitely one of my career highlights. It has led to amazing opportunities, such as my invitation to speak at the Urban Plan Awards back in July, which was hosted at London City Hall. The students present were just like me when I was their age and didn’t know what a career in property comprised of. When I told them about all the opportunities available to them, they instantly started considering a property-related career.

The property industry is continuously adapting to accommodate current and future demands. If you’re the type of person who has a thirst for knowledge, enjoys being challenged and is eager to find solutions to problems then I would recommend a career in surveying.
