About the role
A renaissance mansion roof in dangerous decline. Castle walls under daily attack from the weather. They’re not your everyday buildings, not your average building issues. But then we do look after an extraordinary range of places and spaces here at the National Trust.
While you’ll be based at Polesden Regional Office you’ll be part of the National Trust Consultancy and work with a fascinating variety of buildings and colleagues for a portfolio of properties in the Surrey area. You’ll be the region’s building surveying expert, using your know-how to safeguard the future of these incredible places while helping more and more people to enjoy them. From insightful advice to practical support, from day-to-day operations to long-term projects, you’ll help properties achieve sustainable standards of building conservation, repair and maintenance, access and conservation. An enthusiastic, convincing champion of best practice, you’ll bring new thinking and novel approaches to our building work.
In a day and age where speed and cost are normally paramount, knowing that the quality and attention to detail of our building works isn’t compromised is immensely satisfying – and professionally challenging. You will have the opportunity to work on a variety of interesting projects. Working as part of a team who look after a diverse portfolio of properties including historic structures on the River Wey navigation, our new visitor facilities ready in time for the Olympic cycle race on Box Hill and Polesden Lacey mansion and estate, you’ll relish the chance to enhance visitor enjoyment through your work.
About you
Bringing buildings to life is what excites you, and you’ll love the challenge of helping colleagues to tell their properties’ stories while inspiring visitors. A technically-impressive and professionally-accredited surveyor, you’ll already have an impressive knowledge of building conservation, philosophy and repair. It’s also crucial that you know what’s happening in the wider world of building surveying (and relevant legislation), and how changes and developments will affect our work. You’ll be skilled in project delivery, including writing specifications and contract management. You’ll be confident sharing your expertise, insight and ideas with colleagues, building strong working relationships across your region. Due to some travel within the region, you’ll have a full driving licence and your own vehicle; a mileage allowance will be paid.
