Love Surveying 2018

There’s a lot to love about a career in surveying – opportunities to travel the world, working on interesting projects, and meeting people who share your passions are just a few.

We asked surveyors in various roles what they love about surveying. Here’s what they had to say:

Graham Ellis, Associate Director RICS / Director at Green House Chartered Surveyor

"For 30 years I have specialised in surveying and valuing surveying residential property largely as a partner in a small independent practice and it has been a hard slog. But the world is changing fast and what I love now as Associate Director in the RICS Residential Professional Group team is working on opportunities now arising in abundance to promote and deliver in increasing numbers hitherto understated virtues and skills by way of products, standards and technology to members, stakeholders and most importantly consumers and future members.”

Shyam Visavadia, Project Manager, Faithful+Gould

“Surveying has given me the opportunity to build my academic and professional experience, opened doors to prestigious projects, and allowed me to travel to some of the best places in this world. Surveying is a diverse, tangible and forward thinking profession. What more do you want?”

Fiona Haggett, FRICS, UK Valuation Director, RICS

"Surveying; it’s a job without boundaries. It can take you anywhere in the world, dealing with both large and small assets of every conceivable type. How can a job description that sounds so limited actually be so very vast in scope?"

Selina Baptiste, Quantity Surveyor, MBS Contracting Services Ltd.

"No day is the same in the construction industry. The people you meet and the knowledge that you learn gives you great satisfaction when you discuss it with others outside of surveying. I love being part of something that brings a drawing on paper to life, and knowing deep down that this building will be here longer than I will, and that there will always be someone enjoying and using it."

James Kavanagh, MRICS Director Land Group, RICS

"What I love about surveying? That no two days are the same. Either indoors or outdoors, overseas or at home, we get to use some serious cutting edge technology."
