City Surveyor’s Department

Senior Principal Building Surveyor

Salary £53,240 to £60,870 per annum (inclusive of London Weighting)

Working in the City of London Corporation provides exposure to career-enhancing projects that simply can’t be gained anywhere else. That’s because London offers a varied challenge for the busy City Surveyor’s Operations Division, incorporating a broad property portfolio that stretches from the Square Mile to the West End, plus extended areas of London and open spaces such as Hampstead Heath. Delivering a wide range of construction, maintenance and professional services to our owned and leased properties, the team oversee buildings of great historical significance – such as Tower Bridge and Guildhall – plus high value investment estates. Quite simply, this role is as unique as our multi-skilled staff.

Joining the team who oversee our commercial and operational properties, you will take responsibility for an eclectic range of large revenue refurbishment and cyclical maintenance projects. Managing a team of building surveying staff and consultants, you will ensure plans are completed to the highest standards, managing risk and seeing to it that client relationships are nurtured. You will also prepare annual project bids and assist clients with final bid schedules, offering your professional expertise wherever needed. In particular, you will represent the City of London Corporation in discussions and negotiations with internal departments and external stakeholders such as building control and utilities companies. Keeping a tight handle on the budget, you will plan the effective use of resources, ensuring deadlines and corporate performance standards are met every single time.

To excel in this multi-layered role, you will be CIOB or RICS qualified, with extensive building surveying knowledge and experience of managing an in-house building surveying services and maintenance and refurbishment team. Enjoying solid strategic, communication and people management skills, you will need to be comfortable preparing technical and design briefs, and your comprehensive understanding of health and safety legislation will ensure we consistently exceed our own targets. Confident appointing external consultants, you will understand the complexities of managing and fulfilling contracts, and having previously contributed to property management strategies, you will be able to think politically and corporately when necessary. If you have experience of Local Government or undertaking projects on Listed buildings and in Conservation Areas, that would be an additional plus.

In this enticing position, you will have the potential to guide the development of your staff and shape policies related to property maintenance and building project work, directly impacting on the future of London’s incredible architecture, plus the people entrusted with preserving it. If that’s a role you can step up to, then we’ve got a place for you in the team.
