A long established multi-disciplinary consultancy with seven national offices is seeking a talented Rights of Light Surveyor to be a No. 2 to the Partner within this division of the business. The candidate should have experience in dealing with common law rights of light matters and with assessing daylight and sunlight for planning. AutoCAD experience is not essential but would be an advantage. The role can be based from either their cental London office just a stones throw from the trendy Borough Market, or their office in Kent.

What the Rights of Light Surveyor can expect:

Responsibilities of the Rights of Light Surveyor:

  • Advising clients both internal and external on the implications to their project in respect of daylight, sunlight and common law rights of light
  • Preparing expert reports and providing expert evidence (less frequently) in connection with both planning applications/ appeals and for the Courts
  • Offering advice on risk management and avoidance of issues that might affect the progress of a project
  • Managing existing and developing new client relationships.

Requirements of the Rights of Light Surveyor:

  • Knowledge of a range of relevant case law relating to rights of light is essential as is a working knowledge of BR209 Site Layout Planning for Daylight and Sunlight published by BRE.
  • Must be able to act autonomously in bringing in new business and advising clients from first enquiry through to potentially giving expert evidence to a tribunal.
  • Excellent report writing skills are essential.

Party Walls etc

  • Experience in acting as an appointed surveyor under the Party Wall Etc. Act 1996 and have a reasonable working knowledge of the Act.
  • Membership of Pyramus and Thisbe may be an advantage.

Boundaries

  • Some knowledge of dealing with boundary disputes in domestic situations would be desirable.

Expert Evidence

  • Whilst experience in court or other tribunal is not essential, the person should have experience of writing expert reports in compliance with Civil Procedure Rules and RICS guidance.

Building Surveying Experience

  • Experience in other fields of Building Surveying including Dilapidations, Contract Administration and Building Surveys may be an advantage.
