Undergraduate Junior Quantity Surveyor, Capital Delivery (12-Month Industrial Placement)

Salary: £19,000

Location: Castle Donnington

Closing Date: 2nd December 2018

About the Role

Do you think that you’ve got strong numerical and financial management skills, as well as a practical mind? Then this Junior Quantity Surveyor 12-month industrial placement is ideal for you.

Join us during your penultimate year at University and you’ll have the opportunity to manage costs relating to building and civil engineering projects, from the initial calculations to the final figures. This means you’ll really be experiencing the important role that our exiting Quantity Surveyors play in ensuring our Project Delivery Teams maintain the electric and gas network.

You’ll be supporting the delivery of projects to time and budget, developing your skills in minimising the cost of projects, enhancing value for money, while still achieving the required standards and quality, positioning you at the forefront of one of Capital Delivery’s regional teams. With a mix of office and site based work, you’ll be able to see first-hand how we work constantly to improve our energy networks.

Key Tasks and Areas of Work

Your role will be to support the Quantity Surveyor (QS) in their role of assisting the Project Engineers with the delivery of Capital Projects on the Electricity Transmission and Gas Transmission Networks. As a Junior QS you will play a key role in ensuring that National Grid delivers the construction of assets efficiently.

On large projects as the Junior QS you will assist in protecting National Grid’s commercial interests through the validation of the contractor’s invoices, and the review of Early Warning Notices, Notices of Compensation Events, and assessment of Contractor Claims.

In time as the Junior QS you will be made responsible for your own portfolio and will be responsible for all of the commercial management of a range of smaller projects to support the Project Engineers.

Benefits

In Capital Delivery, we are committed to the personal development of our staff. Joining us, you’ll be supported as you develop a wide range of leadership, business and technical skills through structured training and on the-job experience.

If you have delivered excellent performance during your placement year, you will be offered a full time position as a Junior Quantity Surveyor (starting salary £30,922) commencing July 2019. The added bonus is that National Grid will also then fund you to finish your degree over 2 years as you return part time to University to complete your degree.

Company

Through our energy transmission network, we connect millions safely and reliably to the energy they need. It’s this purpose that drives us forward. Join us and, together, we’ll work to build a more sustainable, better-connected future.

National Grid touches the lives of almost everyone in the UK, with an energy network that stretches across the Atlantic. We’re an international team, and our work underpins the lives of millions of people. Feet forwards, head up, and eyes bright, we’re working hard to create value for people today – and shape the future of energy tomorrow.

In the UK, we don’t generate or sell energy – we join the dots to get energy from A to B. From making a cup of tea in the morning, to keeping the lights on in hospitals, our electricity network puts power in the hands of people. Without it, the world as we know it would grind to a halt.

From apprentices to experienced professionals, engineers to asset analysts, we need people with the spark required to keep us ahead of the curve: energised people, serious about innovation and eager to shape a connected future that benefits customers, communities and our world.

Change is happening faster than ever. To succeed, we need to be as focused on the future as we are on today. That means having a bold vision for the future – but also staying true to the values that led us here today. Looking forwards, without losing sight of who we are.

Why work for us?

The world of energy is changing beyond recognition. Working at National Grid, you won’t just be touching the lives of almost everyone in the UK – you’ll be shaping the way we use and consume energy for generations to come. Whether you’re fresh out of university or a seasoned professional, a career at National Grid means a place at the forefront of technological evolution. It means thrilling potential, and access to industry-leading training and development. Because, as National Grid advances, our people will move forward too.
