In 2012 the University of Manchester embarked on £1 billion 10-year plan to create a world-class campus for our students and staff.

In order to realize this ambitious goal, the Directorate of Estates and Facilities, Design Services Unit is seeking to appoint an Assistant Project Building Surveyor within the Minor Works Team to deliver a number of supporting schemes.  The Design Services Unit, is an in-house practice of multi-disciplinary construction professionals managing a range of refurbishment and maintenance projects across campus, ranging in value from approx. £10k to £500k.

As an Assistant Building Surveyor you will provide a design and project management function in relation to construction related project work allocated to the Minor Works Team.

You will be responsible for ensuring the schemes allocated to you are completed within strict deadlines and within budget.  You will be responsible for obtaining comprehensive client briefs, developing cost effective architectural design solutions that reflect appropriate construction methods, procuring a contractor and managing the site works. You will generally be carrying out the role of Principal Designer on schemes you are leading.

The successful candidate will be responsible for producing appropriate documentation for the engagement of contractors, obtaining all necessary statutory approvals and providing appropriate advice on project planning, programming and procurement .

You will manage the approved budgets for projects in a manner that is compliant with the University’s financial regulations together with managing the resources allocated to your project work.

The successful candidate will possess, as a minimum, an HND/C (or equivalent) in a construction related discipline and have relevant experience in carrying out all aspects of a professional building surveying function in relation to new build and refurbishment works, from project inception to completion.  They will also have experience of acting as Principal Designer.
