Apprentice Building Control Surveyor

Salary: £31,242

Full time (37)

Location: Milton Keynes

Subject to satisfactory progression the salary will increase to £37,937 for year 2 and £42,400 for years 3 and 4. On satisfactory completion of the apprenticeship the apprentice will move in to a Building Control Surveyor post with a salary range of £44,632 to £49,298 (subject to any cost of living increases).

You will bring customer focus, commitment, hard work, dedication and the ability to work as part of a team. We will give you access to a wealth of experience across a broad spectrum of work in a rapidly developing new town; a fully funded Building Control Surveyor Degree from the University of Wolverhampton and paid time off for studying along with the employee benefits offered by Milton Keynes Council.

Progression will lead to involvement with the following activities 

  • Formal checking of Building Regulations applications, and carrying out inspections on site, for an extensive range of projects, at key stages of building work, to ensure the requirements of the regulations are being followed
  • Investigating reports of unauthorised building work and providing evidence for potential enforcement
  • Providing support to the our Helpline by providing advice and guidance in relation to technical enquiries
  • Promoting the local authority building control service and supporting the LABC Partnering Scheme
  • Investigating reports of dangerous structures to determine action required to ensure that structures are safe
  • Liaising, by face to face, verbal and written communications, with construction professionals, builders, members of the public, Councillors, other Council departments and other local authority building control teams in relation to the duties above
  • Feeding your ideas and knowledge into our regular team meetings, to help in the development of our service

Experience, skills & qualifications required

  • Minimum of three A 2-levels at Grade C or higher or their equivalent, or a level 3 apprenticeship in a construction or property related discipline or acceptable equivalent
  • Awareness of the Building Regulations and Building Act 1984
  • Excellent communications skills and ability to deal with a wide range of people and situations
  • Ability to work without supervision and to manage and prioritise your own workload
  • Ability to work safely in typical construction site conditions which may be potentially hazardous
  • Skills in using Microsoft Office software and a Building Control database
  • Full driving licence and your own car suitable for business use
