Forestry England is seeking someone with proven estate management experience to join their land agent team in Central England. 

Forestry England is the government department responsible for protecting, expanding and promoting the sustainable management of woodlands and increasing their value to society and the environment. 

Central England Forest District covers 28,000 hectares in a triangle from Milton Keynes to Preston to the Humber Estuary with diverse woodlands and open habitats including ancient woodland, productive conifer and broadleaf forests and new community woodlands on former brownfield land. 

Purpose of the job 

The Assistant Area Land Agent will work within the Estates Team to deliver professional property advice across the District. Working with two Area Land Agents you will be advising forest operations and recreation teams on a wide range of legal and estate management matters whilst also managing the non-operational property portfolio. A strong collaborative approach to land management issues will be an important part of this role. 

You will help to identify and develop new opportunities across the estate, making a real contribution to our economic, social and environmental objectives. 

Key work areas 

Our estate varies from commercial plantation and ancient broadleaved woodland to large recreational visitor centres, residential properties and agricultural holdings; and also includes utilities, telecomms and sporting. Likewise, your day to day work will span a huge range of topics but will always demand delivering first class professional advice to maximise the potential of the range of let and in hand property. 

You will

- Manage landlord/tenant relationships to complete efficient and timely rent reviews, lease renewals and new lettings on sporting agreements, commercial agreements, recreational sites, residential and grazing agreements; 

- Investigate and protect Forestry England’s interests in relation to access, encroachments, boundary disputes and claims; 

- Improve the financial and environmental sustainability of the Estate; 

- Interpret leases from both a landlord and tenant’s perspective and offer sound professional advice to colleagues. 

Person specification

Essential 
- Ability to analyse complex and unusual estate management issues and develop detailed solutions to ensure best value. 

- Experience of negotiating contract terms, acting on behalf of either a landlord or tenant. 

- Experience of leading rent reviews on residential, commercial or agricultural properties. 

- Valuation experience across a variety of property types and for a range of purposes. 

- Competent user of MS Office – in particular Excel, Word and Outlook. 

Desirable 
- Demonstrable experience of anticipating and communication risks associated with the use of land and buildings. 

- RICS registered valuer. 

- Knowledge of GIS systems. 

- Experience of managing budgets effectively
