Excel Expert

Developing an Operational Benchmarking Cost Model

Construction Consultancy

London, Home Based

Temporary; 8 weeks which may be extended

Job Description:

We are looking for someone with advanced Excel capabilities to work on developing an "operational benchmarking cost model" for the Estates Director of a University.

Skills and Experience:

  • Exceptional Excel modelling skills (complex nested formulas, conditional formatting, pivot tables and charts, slicers, macros, etc.)
  • An eye for detail and able to self-quality assure their work through the use of excel to check for errors / identify outliers which may signal mistakes / inconsistencies etc.
  • An eye for good presentation of data
  • A self-starter, but willing to ask questions and own up if there is a problem they cannot resolve
  • Needs to check in at regular model development gateways to ensure on the right track and to avoid abortive work
  • Construction/surveying/property background would be a plus but not essential

The Role

  • Taking large data sets of property information and property related cost information (maintenance, cleaning, rates, utilities etc.) from a variety of sources to create a database (in Excel) of costs.
  • Part one of the benchmarking model will then use this database to apply to the 400 or so buildings in the University estate to build up a model of the whole estate and its operational costs.
  • This will allow the university master planners to run scenarios in the model of taking buildings or groups of buildings out of the estate, or adding 1 or more new buildings in.
  • The model will need to be developed to be as intuitive to use as possible, so not requiring the users to have any pivot table knowledge (so use of slicers etc.) and to provide a range of graphical reporting outputs.
  • It will need to be easy to navigate and look and feel like a web-based tool, with the final document removing many of the excel toolbars, rulers, axis etc. so that users cannot 'break' the workings (certain aspects of the model will need to be locked down).
  • The second part of the model will need to be used to run one off queries from the database to calculate and present costs as a stand-alone cost for a particular type of building.
  • A lot of the same principles of the above will apply with users able to select from a range of pre-set parameters to build up the details of the new building, for the model to the present the costs.
