About the role

From the original vision over 30 years ago, the ISIS pulsed neutron and muon facility has become one of the UK’s major scientific achievements and the world’s leading pulsed neutron and muon source; changing the way the world views neutron scattering. Owned and operated by the Science and Technology Facilities Council (STFC) at the Rutherford Appleton Laboratory (RAL) in Oxfordshire, ISIS is a world-leading center for research in the physical and life sciences.

None of this could be achieved without significant investment in infrastructure, so to support this we are currently seeking to recruit a Construction Design Manager. Reporting to the ISIS Design Division Head, you will be an engineering leader who can manage a small team of engineers, and liaise with the organisation’s estates team, to deliver the plant, HVAC, gas systems and civil engineering aspect of our projects to the highest possible standard of safety and performance. You will manage several interfaces such as; architects, engineers, sub-contractors and internal stakeholders.

Areas of overall responsibility will typically include:

  • Developing and documenting requirements.
  • Coordinating design information.
  • Managing the in-house design of water plant and HVAC and gas systems.
  • Procurement activities and project management.

Working and liaising with the organisation wide estates department, you will represent the ISIS facility to ensure delivery of new construction projects fit the needs of the facility. You will also be responsible for the day to day line management of a team of engineers, to deliver systems and small construction designs and find the best route to implement these projects.

About you

You will be qualified in a construction related area, or hold equivalent experience within this field. We are ideally looking for someone who is chartered and has a background in coordinating the design elements of industrial or commercial construction projects. You will need a strong understanding of civil engineering and structural issues with a fundamental knowledge of water plant and HVAC systems. A good understanding of the safety aspects of construction design is essential.

As this role will involve leading a team of engineers, you will ideally have background experience in line management or coordinating teams. You will also be working and liaising closely with other teams within the organisation, so you will need to have excellent communication and interpersonal skills.

About us

The Science and Technology Facilities Council (STFC) is one of Europe's largest multi-disciplinary research organisations. Owned and operated by STFC, the ISIS Neutron and Muon Source is a world-leading centre for research in the physical and life sciences.

ISIS is a high energy proton synchrotron which produces thermal neutrons (and muons) for science and engineering research. The neutrons are produced within the two target stations when high energy protons impact heavy metal targets.  Surrounding each target station is a suite of instruments that are capable of carrying out high precision measurements on a wide range of samples, from simple and complex compounds to new alloys, to engineering structures to biological samples and pharmaceuticals. The instruments are capable of detailing atomic structure, and measuring internal magnetic and electric fields as well as measuring stresses and strains. Experiments are often performed over a range of temperatures, external magnetic and electric fields and different sample pressures.

Our benefits

As part of UK Research and Innovation (UKRI), STFC offers a benefits package designed to provide an excellent work/life balance including 30 days’ annual leave, flexible working hours, a workplace nursery and an exceptional pension scheme. To ensure the welfare of our staff, we have a dedicated wellbeing team, specialised support groups and all employees have 24/7 access to our employee assistance programme.
