Cornwall is a fantastic place to live and work, with a rich heritage, spectacular countryside and coastline. An exciting opportunity has now arisen within our ambitious and vibrant Building Control team for a Senior Development Officer (Building Control Surveyor). Through the Building Regulations framework, the team's primary role is to ensure the health, welfare and safety of people in and around buildings whilst furthering the conservation of fuel, power and water.

The team operates in a highly competitive marketplace and we aim to provide a high-quality tailored Building Control service to the businesses and communities of Cornwall and the Isles of Scilly. You will be involved with all matters related to making decisions on Building Regulations applications and the statutory requirements of the Building Act 1984 and allied legislation. In addition, you will assist with promoting the service to our customers and training junior members of staff.

We are looking for a keen, customer focused candidate with proven experience of working in a high quality Building Control environment. You will have demonstrable wide ranging knowledge and understanding of the legislation and technical documents underpinning the Building Regulations, be proficient in effectively managing and prioritising workloads in pressurised situations and have excellent customer focus and negotiation skills.

You will be able to contribute effectively to the productivity of the service and undertake work independently in a prompt and professional manner, in accordance with our ISO quality assured procedures.

You will be qualified with a relevant degree and be a full member of a relevant professional body- i.e.  RICS, CABE, or CIOB. You must be prepared to undertake continuing development and competency assessment in line with expected future regulatory requirements.

A full driving license is essential. There is an expectation that you will be available for out of hours dangerous structure cover, which is operated on a rota basis with a supplementary payment.

The normal duties of the role involve travel on a regular basis. It is a condition of employment that the role holder can exercise satisfactory travel mobility in order to fulfil the obligations of the role. For those journeys where an alternative form of transport is unavailable or impracticable the role holder will be required to provide a suitable vehicle.

Whilst this advert is primarily seeking applications from candidates either living in/or prepared to relocate to Cornwall, we would also consider applications from candidates wishing to work remotely in a plan checking capacity.

If you'd like to have an informal discussion, please contact either Neil Read, Chris Stanbury, or Sarah Williams on 01872 224792.

Please view the role profile, your application will need to demonstrate how you meet the required criteria. Please ensure you answer all of the pre-screening questions in full, within the application form.

Fairness and inclusion are at the heart of our vision for Cornwall.  In order to best serve our communities, we are striving to achieve a diverse workforce that is inclusive of all backgrounds, cultures and identities; e.g. race, disability, sex, gender, age, religion and sexual orientation. We are an equal opportunities and Disability Confident employer, and we will assess applicants on their merits.

Cornwall Council is committed to safeguarding and following safer recruitment principles to help make sure our staff and volunteers are suitable to work with children, young people and adults at risk. It’s a vital part of creating a safe and positive environment and making a commitment to keeping all service users safe from harm.

Whilst the location/work-base for this role has been specified, the current Government guidance around social distancing and our evolving ways of working means that the role may require you to also work remotely (e.g. from home/other locations). We will discuss this with you during the recruitment process.
