Due to retirement, an exciting opportunity has arisen for an experienced Mineral Planning and Estates Manager within Smiths. Reporting directly to the Managing Director, this is a permanent, full time senior position and will be based at the Company’s head office at Enslow in Oxfordshire. This is a challenging and key role with full responsibility for planning, estates, and development matters for a mixed, mineral, waste, residential, fisheries and farming portfolio.

Key experience and skillsets:

  • Extensive experience in planning and estates within the minerals industry;
  • Confident and proficient in managing project teams;
  • Excellent communication and negotiating skills;
  • Track record of securing major new quarry and other planning permissions;
  • Passion for biodiversity and continuous environmental improvement.

The objective will be to identify and manage development opportunities across the estate, to secure legal agreements, new planning permissions and other regulatory consents and provide support to internal commercial and operational teams throughout the full lifecycle of the developments.

Key responsibilities:

  • Instruct and project lead teams of external consultants to undertake planning applications, EIAs and Appeals;
  • Monitor, engage and make submissions to minerals and waste local plans in the operating areas of the business and liaise closely with County and District planning authorities;
  • Work with internal operational teams to provide day to day planning and estates advice and support waste, water, and air regulatory activities;
  • Negotiate land acquisitions, option/leases, planning obligations, and instruct and liaise closely with external lawyers to secure legal agreements;
  • Work with advisors and tenants to manage the farming, fishery, and amenity estate;
  • Work with external parties to manage the biodiversity and amenity value of our restored landholdings;
  • Liaise and engage with a wide range of interested parties and stakeholders across the business to maintain and further develop the positive relationship we have with our local communities;
  • Actively identify and evaluate new growth and development opportunities for the Company.
