The Falkland Islands Government are looking for a suitably qualified and experienced building control inspector/surveyor to join our Planning & Building Service as the Building Advisor.  The Government is committed to creating and sustaining the best quality of life for our entire community and in 2021 our Service became an associate authority member of the LABC (Local Authority Building Control) organisation.

We provide facilities and services that support safe, connected, inclusive, healthy and dynamic communities across the islands. With this in mind we seek likeminded individuals who are passionate about their community, work with integrity and respect, and are innovative when it comes to delivering the Government’s building control service to our residents.

You will take responsibility for a challenging and varied workload and be based primarily in an office environment, although site visits in the field are common, there are occasional opportunities for more remote inspections across the outer islands. The position requires a sound understanding of residential and commercial construction and the post holder must have the ability to think innovatively and adapt to changing priorities. The postholder will establish and maintain effective working relationships across Government and provide a professional customer focussed service.

Set in the South Atlantic Ocean, the Falkland Islands are a unique and diverse place to live and work. The economy is thriving and the demands of development, in particular housing and commercial growth, is bringing many significant challenges. This is a great opportunity to use your skills and knowledge to help shape the future of sustainable development in the Islands for many years to come.

The Person
You will have a recognised professional building qualification and be a chartered member of the Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors and/or The Chartered Association of Building Engineers (or demonstrable equivalent). Your academic proficiency will be commensurate with your professional skills.

You will ideally have at least 5 years’ post-qualification experience dealing with a range of development types. Your report and presentation skills will help to convey the importance of regulation within the construction industry and you will be able to apply those skills in the further development of the Building Regulations. Experience of working in rural or small community’s will also be beneficial where the prescriptive approach requires pragmatic thinking and innovative problem solving.

The ideal candidate will have demonstrated knowledge of sustainable construction practices and design, as well as comprehensive understanding of the United Kingdom Building Regulations, Approved Documents and British Standards upon which the Building Regulations of the Falkland Islands are founded upon. Your experience may extend to working under the scope of the International Code Council documents or National Building Codes within a municipal setting.

You will be IT proficient with a working knowledge of MS Office (Word, Excel, Outlook) and experience of Auto-CAD or similar drafting programs would be an asset. A full valid driving licence is essential.

The Package
The appointment will be fixed term of two year with an option to extend for the right candidate.  Salary ranges between £37,725 and £46,599 per annum depending on qualifications and experience. Additional benefits include a relocation grant, eligibility for up to a 25% gratuity upon satisfactory completion of the contract and a yearly return flight package to the country of recruitment.
