Estates, facilities, site management. Whatever you call it, it can all be pretty similar. You start a new role which seems great at the beginning. A new team, new buildings but very quickly it turns into your old job. You’ve worked hard to fix the problems, then fast forward a few years, you’re back twiddling your thumbs thinking there’s got to be more out there.

For some people that’s fine but are you after more?

St Columba’s College is a prep and senior independent school, nestled in the heart of St Albans. The school now has 800 students and will be growing, they now have the green light to go fully co-educational

This is where you come in.

You’ll be working with a Bursar who has been appointed to help the school grow and modernise its current facilities. You’ll be a pivotal part of this team.

The Bursar has a trades background so, lives and breathes estates. You’ll be his number two, with responsibility for the estates team, made up of maintenance, grounds, and facilities. You’ll advise on health and safety matters and lead a small house team across maintenance and grounds, the cleaning is outsourced.

Back to the plans to grow, as you’ll also be the one doing the growing. With the scale of the works planned, you’ll have the opportunity to assist with capital works, estates strategy and more senior responsibilities as the estate grows bigger

Now some people say there’s no such thing as a free lunch, but there is if you work in an Independent school. You can even work off that extra pudding in the gym if that’s your thing. Maybe, it's looking forward to the 5 weeks holiday, plus the bank holidays and 3 shutdown days between Christmas. They even offer a 6% contributory pension, double the norm.
