Building Surveyor (Architects will also be considered)
£50k - £65k (Depending on Experience) + Package, Dulwich – South London
The Dulwich Estate are seeking an experienced Building Surveyor to work within their Scheme of Management and Surveying teams, overseeing properties managed across our portfolio. This role is also open to candidates with an architectural background.
We are The Dulwich Estate, a registered charity established by our founder Edward Alleyn in 1619 to offer educational opportunities to disadvantaged children, housing to the elderly in need, and a place of community worship.
Alleyn's connection with Dulwich began in 1605 when he bought approximately 1500 acres of land from Sir Francis Calton. Known as the Manor of Dulwich, it was made up of farms and woodland and cost £5000, the equivalent of about £14 million today. It was probably initially intended as a business venture. However legend has it that Alleyn was inspired by an apparition of the devil to create a foundation for the benefit of young and old. The foundation was known as The College of God's Gift.
As a charity, we focus on education, sheltered homes for the elderly, and providing a place of worship in the community. We provide funding to seven outstanding schools, in Dulwich, Orpington and East and Central London, either directly or through foundation trusts.
In 2019 we celebrated our 400 year anniversary, and in all that time and to date we continue investing income from the land and property we own, to enable education for young people, care for the elderly and provide a place of worship within the community, while also maintaining the vibrant and neighbourhoods unique to Dulwich.
As a part of the Estate’s Scheme of Management team, you will spend 80% of your time working with us and 20% of your time working with the Surveying team. The Scheme of Management team manage changes to the external appearance of privately owned Freehold properties and ensure they are kept in good order. The Surveying team manage the repairs and maintenance to the properties owned by the Estate.
When working with us in the Scheme of Management team, you will be working with the Scheme of Management Administrator and assistants to manage applications for consent for works to freehold properties including, reviewing incoming applications, assessing acceptability against design guidelines, determining consultees and application fees, liaising with consultees in order to respond to their general enquiries and ensuring they understand the proposals. You will liaise with applicants in order to explain and negotiate changes that may be necessary to the submitted design, inspect properties, and make photographic records (affected third party properties to be inspected also as applicable). You will also be involved with the enforcement procedures which will include inspections and reporting, i.e. checking building works to ensure compliance with permitted the scheme. There is a Committee meeting held via Teams once a month where you will be required to present proposals and your recommendations to the Committee members and answer any queries that arise.
When working with the surveying team, you will be required to assist with the preparation of five-year repair and maintenance plans for properties throughout the Estate and assist with general Building Surveying duties, as directed by the Principal Building Surveyor.
What You’ll Need
As one of the Building Surveyors within the business, you will form part of a small but busy and friendly, team. Whilst there is work to be done, we try to make sure everyone has the tools and support to perform their role, whilst enjoying what they do. So, we hope you can bring your personality to the team as well as the following:
- Proven and relevant experience of property design assessment, construction, and/or conservation.
- Good educational background, with excellent oral and written presentation skills.
- Computer literate.
- Excellent customer care skills.
- A related property design, construction, or conservation qualification.
- Organised and self-motivated with an ability to work on own initiative.
- A current driving licence and able to provide your own transport.

You will have the autonomy to perform your role with the confidence of a supportive team behind you. In terms of the remuneration and package from The Dulwich Estate you can expect the following:
- £50k - £65k base salary – negotiable D.O.E
- 20 days annual leave + Bank Holidays (plus half a day extra leave before every Bank Holiday)
- Pension (The Estate contributes 12.5% whilst the employee contributes 5%)

- Death in Service – 3 x annual salary paid to next of kin / nominated person.
