About this Role and you :

As a global organisation, the Commonwealth War Graves Commission (CWGC) operates in over 150 countries and territories, and honours and cares for the men and women of the Commonwealth forces who died in the First and Second World Wars, ensuring they will never be forgotten. Funded by six Member Governments, our work began with building, and now maintaining, cemeteries at 23,000 locations all over the world.

Today, over a century after we first began, our work continues through our staff, supporters and volunteers who preserve our unique cultural, horticultural and architectural heritage and ensure that the stories of those who died are told.

We are incredibly excited to be hiring for an energetic Building Surveyor from a practical surveying/engineering background to support our Operations team in managing structural projects across The Middle East, Africa and the Indian Sub-Continent. Primarily based in Maidenhead, you will be travelling far and wide, so a love of travel would be an advantage.

You will spend time working with our overseas works staff, delivering technical training to build and enhance their development. You will line manage a small team and oversee the construction and maintenance of monuments and other structures within Commission sites across Southern and Eastern Africa. You will advise on all technical matters and manage overseas works staff. It will also ensure alignment with Commission strategy, policies and procedures, along with other Area requirements. It is a key part of the Area's Operations team and reports to the AAA Deputy Director. It is essential that you can demonstrate an ability to deliver in an environment with multiple internal and external stakeholders.

You will be able to demonstrate

To be successful in this position you will have a degree in a relevant technical qualification and substantial experience in managing, leading and training small teams. An expert knowledge of conservation techniques, experience of undertaking condition surveys of sites and experience of researching and compiling business case documents is essential. Extensive experience of project management from end to end, including the implementation of repairs via a project and managing and tendering processes for £50K to £300K range projects, will be an advantage. As this role will involve travel, experience of travelling to remote locations and lone working would be beneficial.
