Job Description

Candidate Pack Chamber Roof Project - Technical Adviser March 2023 - Copy.pdf – 119KB

Introduction

Technical Advisors are appointed in line with decisions taken by Parliament’s Joint Investment Board (JIB) and following our governance framework for projects, programmes and portfolios.   The decisions taken by JIB effectively require Category A (highest risk/complexity) project and programme boards to include an external member.

We are now looking to appoint an external Technical Adviser for the House of Lords Chamber Roof Project.

Information about the role

The House of Lords Chamber Roof project will repair and refurbish the cast-iron roof that covers the House of Lords Chamber, the Prince’s Chamber and the Royal Gallery. This is the largest single roof in the Palace of Westminster, dating from the original construction of the Palace in the mid-19th century. Although the roof was refurbished in the 1990s, the techniques and materials used have not stood the test of time, and the roof now needs thorough restoration, to protect the many important works of art, furnishings and fixtures in these key ceremonial spaces for future generations. In undertaking this work, the project will build on the successful refurbishment of the other cast-iron roofs in the Palace of Westminster, work on which was completed in early 2022.

Under the governance model for the project, accountability overseen by a senior responsible owner (SRO).  The SRO is seeking a Technical Adviser to join the project’s board. The board supports the SRO in strategic direction of the project. This includes holding the SRO accountable for delivery of the project’s requirements and benefits, as well as managing coordination with senior stakeholders, and dependencies relating to other projects and programmes.

Candidate Profile

Candidates will come from a range of backgrounds and areas of the United Kingdom.  All candidates will be required to demonstrate in their written applications and at interview how their skills, experience and personal qualities, from current or previous roles, will equip them to meet the requirements of the role. Please ensure you provide evidence, metrics where relevant, and examples (as far as you are able) in response to these when writing your application. Should you be selected for interview, these areas will be assessed in more depth at the interview stage.
