Head of Built Environment at Swinton Estate

Salary of £60,000 per annum, plus Swinton Estate benefits 

40 hours per week 


The Swinton Estate is an extensive privately owned rural estate and exclusive leisure destination at Masham, North Yorkshire. Dynamic and progressive with a strong focus on sustainability, due to a change in organisational structure the Estate has created a new role for an experienced, professionally qualified senior lead on the management of all built assets, facilities and infrastructure.



The successful candidate will be responsible for the entire built environment portfolio, ranging from the Grade II* Listed castle at Swinton Park, to the rural, residential and commercial assets across the Estate, and all of the Swinton Park and Swinton Bivouac buildings, infrastructure and facilities. Accountable for leadership, direction and operation of both core maintenance work and strategic projects, they will actively promote the highest standards of compliance, best practice, communication and customer service to the Estate owners, tenants, colleagues and members of the local and professional communities.


About The Swinton Estate

The Estate is owned by the 4th Earl and Countess of Swinton and has been in the Cunliffe-Lister family since the 1880s. It has developed over the years and covers traditional rural enterprises from farming and forestry to residential and commercial properties. It is also well knowing the luxury hospitality and leisure sectors, including Swinton Park Hotel, Swinton Country Club and Spa, Swinton Bivouac and has interests in the commercial grouse and pheasant shoots. Over the next few years, it will be continuing a challenging, dynamic and varied range of building and redevelopment projects across the Estate portfolio.



Knowledge and experience

  • MRICS qualified Building Surveyor or professionally qualified equivalent, preferably with at least 10 years PQE and with experience of rural and heritage property, and diversified leisure assets and facilities.
  • Practical working knowledge of traditional vernacular construction and heritage buildings.
  • Proven track record of delivery, budgeting and financial management across workstreams, programmes and projects.
  • Professional experience of CDM contract management and administration.
  • Working knowledge of the BSA 2022.
  • Proficient and confident use of IT with software skills to include MS Office, GIS Mapping, workflow / case management systems and online finance systems.
  • Experience of biomass heating and hot water systems and pool plant, or a willingness to undertake training.
  • CAD proficiency would be an advantage.
  • An H&S qualification such as IOSH or NEBOSH or equivalent would be desirable.
  • Full UK driving license.
