About Us:

Middle Temple is one of the four Inns of Court, which have the exclusive right to Call their members to the Bar of England & Wales, i.e., to admit those who have fulfilled the necessary qualifications to the degree of Barrister-at-Law, which entitles them, after a period of vocational training, to practise as Barristers. The Inn is a professional membership organisation as well as a property landlord with a substantial property portfolio in central London.

The estate consists of an historically important collection of buildings ranging from the Hall built in 1570 through to post war properties constructed in sympathetic style in the 1950s. Many of the buildings are listed and together with associated courtyards and gardens, all sit within ‘The Temple’ conservation area.

Building Surveyor – The Role:

To assist the Director of Estates with day-to-day operation of the Estate with particular emphasis on projects covering repair, refurbishment and improvement of the Inn’s properties. 

Building Surveyor - Key Responsibilities:

  • Conduct building surveys, identify defects, and prepare schedules for repairs and dilapidations
  • Collaborate with the Estates Officer to ensure timely completion of improvement works between tenancies
  • Provide technical advice on maintaining buildings, including Grade 1 and Grade 2* listed properties
  • Liaise with the Facilities Manager to ensure the Estates Maintenance Team meets service delivery standards and stays within budget
  • Assist with planning and listed building applications, ensuring compliance with property legislation and building regulations Prepare detailed programmes and specifications for estate development, refurbishment, and maintenance, and manage major projects
  • Prepare budgets, specifications, and tender documents, supervise work, and manage payments for annual contracts
  • Commission and manage professionals and contractors for building projects, ensuring performance meets expectations
  • Assist in preparing annual budgets for estate development, refurbishment, and maintenance, ensuring spending is within budget and standards are met
  • Prepare Landlord’s licences for tenants' proposed works

 

Building Surveyor – You:

  • Full membership of an appropriate professional body (e.g., RICS - Building Surveying) with a minimum of 5 years PQE (ideally MRICS)
  • Relevant experience in a similar environment or understanding of not-for-profit organisations
  • Strong analytical skills to develop creative solutions for complex building issues
  • Proven experience in surveying and working on historic buildings (Grade 1, 2, 2*) including maintenance and refurbishment
  • Proficiency in preparing Schedules of Condition and Dilapidations
  • Knowledge of Landlord and Tenant matters, including rent reviews and lease renewals is advantageous
  • Effective budget management, including detailed budgets, cash flows, and project timelines
  • Excellent project management skills and understanding of Regulatory and Health and Safety legislation Familiarity with various procurement methods and ability to manage SLAs and contracts for quality and cost efficiency
  • IT proficiency, including databases, Microsoft Office, and AutoCAD/Autodesk architectural software
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills
  • Flexibility to work outside normal hours when needed
