Job Details
The Trustees of Exeter Church Charities in Devon are seeking to appoint a self-employed Chartered Surveyor, or other person with professional property management experience, to act as the Surveyor and Clerk to the Trustees.
The Charity has 18 Almshouses on two sites and, although variable, the workload is usually 15-20 hours per week. The current fee structure is circa £32,000 p.a.
Responsible to the Board of Trustees, this is an interesting and varied role, and applicants will need good property management skills and experience, good people skills and a personable and compassionate approach.
The role includes – organising repairs, maintenance and refurbishment works with various external contractors and tradesmen, financial management and bookkeeping, organising and attending the Trustees’ quarterly meetings and residents’ visits, liaising with and helping the residents, filling vacancies, assisting the Trustees with budgetary planning, overseeing the Charity’s various plans, policies and procedures and liaising with the Charity’s financial investment team.
Good report writing and communication skills would be an advantage, along with the ability to advise the Trustees on all the other various matters associated with running a small Almshouse Charity, including the requirements of the Charity Commission. However, previous charity sector or almshouse experience is not essential.

Company
Exeter Church Charities (also known as Exeter Municipal Charities (Church List)) is a collection of various smaller Charities which have amalgamated over the years to become an Exeter Almshouses provider, with 18 houses and flats on two distinct sites.
The intention, which remains broadly the same as that of the original benefactors, is to provide good quality accommodation for older people with an Exeter connection. Our Exeter Almshouses are therefore aimed at helping local people with a housing need, who are usually aged 55 and over and capable of independent living.
